I guess I’m not writing in my diary that much these days. I just looked at the last few entries and they’re not very often. That cut from the scythe healed up just fine. I didn’t get tetanus or anything. Mom says we’ll have to give ourselves tetanus shots every once in a while, but for now we’re all current.
We got a ton of wheat out of that field. We threshed and winnowed about a tenth of it today and it made like a tub full of sixty pounds of wheat kernels. The kids helped a lot.
We threshed it by sticking a bunch of the wheat stalks into a barrel and then basically tearing it up with a weed eater. That got the wheat heads off of the stalks in kind of a mess of straw and grain. Then we poured the mess into a screen strainer with holes big enough for the grains to fall through but not the grass so much. Then we just poured the grains back and forth between two buckets in front of a fan to make all the chaff blow away. We had a bunch of nice wheat kernels left over. The kernels actually taste pretty good on their own. But now we’ll grind them up into flour and see if Mom can make bread out of them.
We’ll do more tomorrow.
